The founding of Wattsun
Wattsun pop-up power was officially established in 2016 by the current owners, Koen Olieslagers and Bart Hendriks. Olieslagers, an industrial product designer, conceived the initial concept a year earlier, with Hendriks joining in the summer of 2016 after completing his studies in commercial economics. The two had met during their time at the Hogeschool Arnhem Nijmegen (HAN) and decided to collaborate on Olieslagers’ idea.
As early as 2015, the first sketches of the Wattsun concept were put on paper, marking the pioneering work in the field of stackable battery systems. Olieslagers focused on aspects such as stacking, portability, and user-friendliness. Concurrently, research was conducted to identify the right battery for the system, considering factors such as energy density, cycles, weight, and reliability. This laid the foundation for the unique stackable battery system.
After completing their studies, Olieslagers and Hendriks immediately began developing, producing, and selling their first battery systems. This endeavor was made possible by an investment from InnoEnergy. In addition to attracting investors, the duo also gained attention from the market. Wattsun secured its first customer in 2017, and by 2018, the first forty Wattsun modules were produced.
